The bible is a book written for Humans. The focus in the gospel is on humans. However God is the creator of all. When John writes “…and the life was the light of Human beings” he emphasises that the Cosmic Word, the conversation with creation, became incarnate as a human, on Earth.
Revelation to see also comes from Jesus through us learning to see things in different way. Living with a Christ-like mind is salvation and healing. As we move closer to the source of being the shadow falls away. This metaphor should not be taken too literally!
Although in my mind I am thinking of returning to the light, and being absorbed. Light also radiates outwards. Through living in the light we can find the courage to live, and then expand moving outwards and flourishing.
If it is life itself that we have discovered, why would you wrap it up? The experience is not fragile like whimsy or magical realism, or an encounter with erudite art in a high class gallery. Life is to be lived in all its fullness. The light is the ongoing life flourishing in humanity, and beyond.
Life is also in the green of growing plants, the solidness of stone, the lightning streaking accross the sky. Long before words were discovered by humans Jesus was part of the conversation.
“The eternal light reveals itself in a twofold manner through scripture and creature”
[ch11 p88 Eye of the Eagle]
John Scotus observes that we have no record of Jesus appearing as an angel to the angels. Yet it is recorded that in him all things will be restored. Part of the working out of that is the collections of texts we call the bible, and our intellects through which we can reflect on our experiences. So here are some questions to reflect on.
- Do any texts encouraging us to become imitators of Christ come to mind?
- Does our nature as humans place any responsibilities on us to reveal the light to non humans?
