At CLC this week we discussed music, AI, and creativity. Our discussion wandered though many fields! And hopefully the fruits of one Quartz members creativity will be available to see and hear online soon.
In a few decades we have moved from pulling out a phone to Google for answers to questions to having conversations with AI about complex matters. Tools for image manipulation like photoshop have developed to the stage where we can take still photos and produce videos. AI can compliment an artists creativity and help them produce things that would have been impossible only a few years ago.
When we discussed, we celebrated how wonderful this is. We also wondered how it would be possible to perform or record a work created with the use of an AI voice and musicians – (we are going to try). Is it possible to create something of the same standard without spending more money and hours than an amateur can make available?
We decided that a human writing the lyrics is key to it being a creative act. The skillful choices they make when the parameters for the AI are set, and the process of choosing which results to keep. The prayerful attitude to digitally sculpting sounds that communicates a lived experience bringing life to the tool.
- What is your experience of AI art and music?
- When is it a tool that exploits human skill and creativity, when does it help expand what is possible for a person to be creative?
- In what ways could this new technology help the unfolding and fulfillment of creation?
While you reflect on this, a warning! Here is a track by a young punk band using the technology of the Dead Kennedys to burst the bubble of the echo chamber digital tech can become.
